Nicole Hughes - Buchtel Campus Principal

Nicole A. Hughes is the Campus Principal at Buchtel Community Learning Center in Akron, Ohio. Formerly, the Headmistress of Pine Forge Academy, a historically-Black boarding academy in Pennsylvania, Mrs. Hughes also served as the Recording Secretary of the PFA Boards of Trustees, a member of the Board of Trustees for Washington Adventist University, an ex officio member of the Pine Forge Academy Foundation. She has also taught seminars in school leadership and teaching excellence throughout the mid-Atlantic. Mrs. Hughes was the Founding Principal of Foundation Collegiate Academy, where her team secured annual graduation and college acceptance rates of 100%. Previously, Mrs. Hughes served as a History Lead Teacher and Coordinator of Students Affairs at Frederick Douglass Academy VII in Brooklyn. 

Mrs. Hughes has also served as a Teacher Selector for the New York City Teaching Fellowship prior to joining the Foundation Academies. Mrs. Hughes received an Excellence in Teaching Citation from the New York State Assembly in 2007 and again in 2010 for her students' achievement in the classroom and on standardized assessments. Mrs. Hughes holds a Bachelor of Arts in History from Yale University, a Master's in the Science of Teaching from Pace University and a Masters of Education from the Teachers College at Columbia University. Ms. Hughes is currently working on a doctoral degree at Johns Hopkins University. Mrs. Hughes is formally known as Ms. Falconer. She and her husband have a two year old son and are expecting their second child in August 2018.



Antonio Preston - Academy Principal, Buchtel CLC HS

Antonio Preston is an innovative, goal-oriented instructional leader and educator with over 20 years of experience as a successful problem solver, planner, mentor, and instructional coach.  Serving previously as a Dean of Students at Akron’s East Community Learning Center, Assistant Principal experiences including Akron Opportunity Center (AOC), Firestone High School CLC and NIHF-STEM High School.  Mr. Preston will now serve as Academy Principal at Buchtel CLC where he will continue to collaborate and support teachers in various capacities to improve instruction, student achievement, and ensure every learner graduates career and college ready.  

Antonio Preston holds a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education Mathematics from Kent State University, a Masters of Arts in Secondary Education Administration from the University of Akron and is currently working on an Associate Degree in Biblical Studies from the Mountain of the Lord Christian International Bible College.

As Academy Principal, Mr. Preston desires to help establish a positive school culture and educational programming necessary for student development and achievement.  He seeks to promote staff professional development and growth as well as building teamwork and cooperation. Mr. Preston will continue to work with building leaders, parents, and community members and partners to ensure that students remain disciplined and focused, helping them to reach their highest academic potential. Mr. Preston will lead the 9th and 10th grades, facilitating our 9th Grade Freshmen Academy and preparing to lead the Academy of Leadership and Innovation in 2019-2020.

Kiena S. Hughley, Ed. S – Support Principal, Buchtel CLC MS

Education has been a passion of mine for as long as I can remember. I have experience developing and implementing instructional programs for youth. I have background presenting within multi-cultural, inclusionary, and regular education classrooms.  My interests include: special education, family therapy, restorative justice, and micro aggressions in education. I obtained my undergraduate degree in Psychology at the University of Akron. I went on to further my education at Cleveland State University earning both a Master of Education and Educational Specialist degree. Currently, I am a doctoral student at Youngstown State University studying educational leadership with a focus on the over-representation of minority students in special education.  

I am a member of the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Inc. and Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc.  Through both organizations, I continue my work with youth and women alike. I have served as advisor to both the Kudos and Xinos youth programs, an affiliate group of National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Inc. and Co-advisor for the Philos (friends of Sigma), an affiliate group of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. I have also held other offices in both organizations as Secretary, Treasurer, and Membership Chair.  In 2016, I was inducted as a member of the Golden Key Honor Society at the University of Akron.

My hobbies include serving the community through my organizations, traveling whenever and wherever I can (I enjoy beaches the most!), planning and hosting parties, baking, making chocolate treats, making candles, and reading and writing. Ms. Hughley will lead the 7th grade team and work along Mr. Turner to lead the middle school academy.

Mr. Brian Turner – Freshmen and Middle School Academy Principal

Brian Turner is a native of Akron, Ohio and a graduate of John R. Buchtel High School now called Buchtel Community Learning Center. After graduating from high school Brian enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and completed his basic training at Parris Island in South Carolina.  He completed his undergraduate studies in education at Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio and earned his Master’s in Education from the University of Akron. He also holds a certification in marketing education from Kent State University and administration leadership from Cleveland State University.


Mr. Turner was recently appointed as the academy principal for Buchtel CLC. He served as a Dean of Students at Buchtel from 2012-2018. Prior to becoming a dean he was a marketing education instructor at Garfield High School.  Brian served as an adjunct instructor at the University of Akron teaching sports management and sports marketing courses.


His employment career has included working for the Akron Area YMCA, Project GRAD Akron, Summit County Juvenile Courts and managing the Camp Roulston Juvenile Boot Camp program in the early 90’s.

Some of Mr. Turner’s hobbies and interest include mentoring young men in general, reading, public speaking, listening to a variety of jazz music, fishing, and competing in dog shows with his English Bulldogs.


Brian is a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated and worked with the Jim Brown Amer-I-Can Self-Empowerment program. Mr. Turner also served as the First Vice President of the Central State University - National Alumni Association. Mr. Turner will lead the middle school academy and will serve as the permanent Freshmen Academy Principal (In 2019, students at 7 – 12 schools will experience the Freshmen Academy in grade 8).

Erica Joi Glover – Academy Principal, Buchtel CLC HS

Erica Joi Glover , born to Joseph and Sheryl Glover, was raised in Warren, Ohio, where she graduated from Warren G. Harding High School.  She earned a full athletic scholarship to play basketball at the University of Akron, obtaining an undergraduate degree in Education (Intervention Specialist), and a Master’s degree in Principalship.  Erica just earned a doctoral degree in Urban Education, with a specialization in Policy and Planning, from Cleveland State University. She currently works as an Instructional Leader for Akron Public Schools.  Erica is the proud mother of Kylan Armond Richburg and enjoys spending time with family and friends. Dr. Glover will lead the 11th and 12th grade team and is preparing to lead the Academy of Global Industry and Design in 2019-2020.
